Getting this thing set up was a nightmare. It took forever, and that’s mostly because the instructions were a complete mess. Whoever put them together clearly didn’t think about people actually trying to follow them. I was frustrated the whole time, and it really shouldn’t have been that difficult.

"Useful, but not exactly hike-friendly"
I got this thinking it would be an easy thing to bring on hikes, and I guess it’s fine in some ways, but I’m not totally sold on it. It feels a bit bulky in my pocket, and the clip never really sat comfortably on my bag strap. I wanted something I could just grab and go without thinking about it, but I ended up leaving it at home a few times, which kind of defeats the purpose. It’s not bad, just not as portable as I was hoping.
"Messaging works fine, but I mostly notice the slow replies"
The two-way messaging does what it’s supposed to do, and I don’t think much about it when everything’s moving smoothly. The main thing I notice is that replies can be a bit slow sometimes, which stands out when I’m waiting on an answer. Overall, it’s okay and gets the job done.

I’d say the SPOT device does what it’s supposed to do most of the time, but it’s not the easiest thing to use. The buttons are kind of confusing, and the lights don’t really give you a clear sense of what’s happening. I found myself checking the manual more than a few times, which gets annoying when you’re out and about. Overall, it feels a little old-school and clunky. It’s not awful, but for roughly what it costs, I expected it to be more straightforward.

"Works fine, but the price and reminders are annoying"
The app works okay for what it does, but I don’t think the yearly cost is worth it. What really bugs me is how aggressive the reminders are, it feels like I’m constantly being pushed to renew or upgrade. If it were cheaper and a little less pushy, I’d probably feel better about using it

The billing terms felt unclear to me, and I did not feel like I got enough warning before I was charged. I reached out to support hoping they would clear things up, but it did not really make the situation any easier.

It worked fine for what I needed, though the response time felt a bit slower than I expected. Not a huge issue, but it could be a little smoother.

"Honestly, it made me more worried than reassured"
I bought this mostly because I wanted to feel safer when I’m out hiking by myself, but it kind of had the opposite effect. I thought it would give me some peace of mind, and instead I kept second-guessing it the whole time.
The tracking seemed really inconsistent, and I was constantly wondering, wait, is my location even updating or not?? That’s not exactly comforting when the whole point is to feel like someone could find you if something went wrong.
Support didn’t really make things better either. Replies were slow and generic, so I never felt like my concerns were actually being handled. I expected to feel more secure using it, but mostly I just felt frustrated and unsure. I wouldn’t buy it again

"Not Worth the Hassle for Trip Planning"
I tried using it to plan a trip, i lost patience quickly. It didn’t really make things easier and a lot of it felt confusing. I was hoping it would save me time, but I ended up feeling more annoyed than helped.

"Kinda limited for what I needed"
I was expecting a bit more from this. It works, but it feels baaasic, and there just aren’t many options to tweak the features or setup the way I wanted. For the price, I really thought it would do more. After a while, it just got annoyyying to use.

"Battery Died Way Too Fast"
I took my SPOT on one short trip and the battery was already almost drained by the end. For something that’s supposed to be reliable outdoors, that really caught me off guard. it’s frustrating, and I’m not exactly excited to deal with customer service either since I don’t have much confidence they’ll actually make it right

"Decent service, frustrating cancellation"
so... the service itself was fine while I was using it, but trying to cancel was way more annoying than it needed to be. There wasn’t just a simple cancel button, so I had to dig around and then contact support, which felt like they were making it harder on purpose. It took longer than it should have, and I was stressed I might get charged again. Support did eventually take care of it, so I wouldn’t give it 1 star, but the whole thing left a bad impression. Cancelling should be simple in 2026

I tried using it during a trip, i’m not really sure what went wrong, but about half of my messages just never arrived. That’s frustrating when you’re trying to keep people updated. I wanted it to be useful, but I don’t think I’d trust it for anything important.

I reached out to support and just never got a response, which was frustrating. I kept checking my email, then kind of forgot about it, then remembered again because the issue still wasn’t fixed. there wasn’t any help at all...

"I bought the SPOT assuming it would work..."
I bought the SPOT assuming it would work with my newer Android phone and laptop, but it was a mess. The app and site just would not cooperate, pairing kept failing, and the maps only loaded properly some of the time. Like, how is this okay for something that’s supposed to be reliable?
When I reached out to support, they basically told me to try a different browser or another device, which didn’t really help since I already paid for it and expected it to work with what I have. Definitely check compatibility before you buy, because I really wish I had.

"GPS takes way too long"
I got this for hiking. At least, that was the plan. But half the time I’m just standing around on the trail waiting for it to find a GPS signal. Sometimes it takes 10 or 15 minutes. By then I’m already irritated and just want to get moving. Disappointing, honestly. Not what I expected

"Pretty good, just not as accurate as I expected"
It works decently overall, but I expected the tracking to be a little more precise. Sometimes it lags or shows me slightly off the trail, which can be a bit annoying. It’s not terrible by any means, just not quite as accurate as I was hoping for.
